A motorcycle that looks solid while you're parked can behave very differently once you start driving. Braking, cornering, bumps, vibration, and suspension movement can all put your tie-down setup to the test.
Most problems don't come from complicated mistakes, either. They're usually simple things: choosing the wrong attachment point, overtightening a strap, using worn equipment, or forgetting to check everything after you've been on the road.

1. Using the Wrong Tie-Down Points
A tie-down strap is only as useful as the part of the motorcycle you're attaching it to.
One of the easiest mistakes to make is choosing an attachment point simply because it's convenient or easy to reach. Mirrors, turn signals, plastic bodywork, brake or clutch lines, wiring, and exhaust components aren't designed to secure the weight and movement of a motorcycle during transport.

Handlebars also shouldn't automatically be treated as the correct attachment point for every bike. Depending on the motorcycle and handlebar setup, the bars, mounts, controls, or surrounding components may not be appropriate for the forces created by the tie-downs.
Instead, look for strong, structurally appropriate locations recommended for your motorcycle. Depending on the bike, that may include manufacturer-designated tie-down points, portions of the frame, or appropriate locations around the triple-clamp area.

2. Overtightening the Straps and Over-Compressing the Suspension
If tight is good, tighter must be better, right?

A motorcycle's suspension will usually compress to some degree as you tension the tie-downs. That compression helps maintain tension as the truck or trailer travels over bumps and uneven roads.
The mistake is continuing to tighten the straps until the suspension is completely bottomed out.
You want enough tension to keep the motorcycle upright and stable without unnecessarily loading the suspension or other components.
There's no single suspension-compression percentage that's right for every motorcycle. Different bikes, suspension systems, tie-down locations, and manufacturer recommendations can call for different setups.
Instead of chasing a specific number, tighten the straps evenly and gradually. The motorcycle should remain stable while still having some suspension travel available.
More tension isn't always more secure.
3. Skipping the Wheel Chock
Tie-down straps secure the motorcycle, but they aren't the only part of a good hauling setup.
The front wheel also needs to be controlled.

Without a wheel chock or another appropriate front-wheel stop, the tire may have more opportunity to turn or move as the truck or trailer accelerates, brakes, and changes direction. That movement can affect the rest of your tie-down setup.

It can also make loading easier, especially when you're trying to position motorcycles consistently or fit multiple bikes into the same trailer.

- Abrasion or worn areas
- Damaged stitching

5. Using Too Few Tie-Down Points
A motorcycle can feel surprisingly solid while you're standing beside a parked trailer.
The real test begins when the trailer starts moving.
Your tie-down setup needs to control movement in multiple directions as you accelerate, brake, corner, and travel over uneven pavement.
That's why relying on too few points of securement can be a problem.
Rather than focusing on a universal number of straps, think about what your complete setup is actually controlling. The motorcycle should be prevented from leaning or shifting significantly from side to side, forward, or backward during normal transport.

Your truck or trailer anchor points matter just as much as the straps themselves.

6. Forgetting to Secure the Rear of the Motorcycle
It's easy to focus most of your attention on the front of the bike.
That's where the wheel chock is. That's usually where the primary tie-downs are being tensioned. And once the motorcycle is standing upright, everything can look finished.
But the rear of the motorcycle can still move.

Rear securement can help limit unwanted side-to-side and forward-and-back movement as the truck or trailer changes direction.
As with the front of the bike, choose rear attachment points carefully. Depending on the motorcycle, a suitable structural frame location, swingarm, rear wheel, or manufacturer-designated point may be appropriate.
Avoid routing straps against brake lines, wiring, bodywork, exhaust components, or anything else that could be damaged.
Rear tie-downs are generally there to help control movement rather than heavily compress the rear suspension.
Once everything is secured, give the motorcycle a controlled push from different directions. Some suspension movement is normal, but the bike itself shouldn't be able to shift significantly around the truck or trailer.
7. Not Rechecking Your Tie-Downs After You Start Driving
You checked everything before leaving.
The motorcycle felt solid.
That doesn't mean you're finished.
Once the truck or trailer starts moving, the entire setup begins experiencing vibration, suspension movement, bumps, braking forces, and other loads that weren't present while you were parked.
The motorcycle can settle into its final position and strap tension can change.
After you've driven a short distance, stop somewhere safe and inspect the setup again.
Check:
- Strap tension
- Hooks and carabiners
- Soft loops
- Anchor points
- Wheel chock position
- Motorcycle position
- Suspension compression
- Excess webbing
If something has loosened or shifted, correct it before continuing.
For longer trips, check the motorcycle periodically and after particularly rough sections of road.
It only takes a couple of minutes, and catching a loose strap early is much easier than discovering a shifted motorcycle when you reach your destination.
